The School Resource Officer acts
as a liaison between the Brewster Police Department, students and school
department personnel, and the parents and guardians of the students.
Many students have never had direct contact with a police officer. The
School Resource Officer’s goal is to develop an open and honest
relationship with the students. It is only through a relationship of
mutual trust and respect that the program can be effective.
The new D.A.R.E. program
consists of a 10-week elementary school block that will be taught to the
5th grade students at the Eddy Elementary School by the School Resource
Officer. Brewster is the first town on Cape Cod to implement the new
D.A.R.E. program in its schools. The Brewster Police Department is
fully committed to this important part of its community policing
efforts.
The new D.A.R.E. program is a
drug education program that was developed by educators. It covers
topics that include alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, inhalants and other
drugs and further focuses on self-esteem, responsibility and resisting
peer pressure. Decision-making skills are taught to assist students
with making sound and responsible decisions.
The D.A.R.E. program alone is not
a solution to the worldwide epidemic of drug abuse although it is a
vital component to a solution that includes police, educators, parents,
and the community. Together as a partnership we will continue to strive
to better our community and strengthen our children.
